Opportunities For 英语 Majors

According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, “what sets two equally qualified job candidates apart can be as simple as who has the better communication skills.” 英语 majors learn how to write, analyze material and communicate effectively. When not in the classroom, our University, and the Department of 英语, 写作 and Modern Languages, afford you the chance to practice these skills outside the classroom.

Academic Opportunities

As an 英语 major, you can combine your degree with a related minor, 双学位, or a pre-professional program; or transition directly into our MAEd program. Our 英语 students can also choose to earn their CA credential while they earn their undergraduate degree.

Extracurricular Activities

Curriculum

The 英语 major attracts students who are curious, creative and interested in language - that unique human attribute that allows us to read with insight, think with clarity, and write and speak with purpose. As an 英语 major you will experience a curriculum that is rich and diverse, including a special topics course designed and taught by faculty each year.

英语 Sample Courses

ENG 341: American Literature I
3

This course will survey American literature from its beginning to 1850 including journals, 日记, 布道, and pamphlets with an emphasis on the writings of Irving, 霍桑, 坡, 和梅尔维尔. Prerequisite: 201年英格 or 201年曾 or 202年曾.

ENG 361: 英语 Literature I

This course will survey representative 英语 prose, 诗歌, and drama from the Anglo-Saxon period to 1800 and look at the readings from such writers as the Beowulf, 乔叟, 莎士比亚, 多恩, 斯威夫特, 教皇, 和约翰逊. Students will also become acquainted with the literary heritage of the 英语-speaking world. Prerequisite: 201年英格 or 201年曾 or 202年曾.

ENG 466: 莎士比亚

Critical reading and analysis of selected examples of 莎士比亚's histories, 喜剧, and tragedies will be the focus of this course. Prerequisite: (201年英格 or 201年曾 or 202年曾), 271年英格.

WRT 333: Topics in Creative 写作

As a focused exploration of genre and subject matter in a workshop setting. Possible topics include nature writing, travel writing, and experimental writing. Course may be repeated for elective credit. Prerequisite: (关于102年 or 关于201年 or equivalent), (201年曾 or CENG 301 or equivalent).

Although primarily a 莎士比亚an, his academic interests are wide, and he enjoys uncovering and analyzing life in 莎士比亚 and other literature in his classes and in his writing. Dr. 诺顿 is also one of the leaders and developers of the Around-the-World Semester®.
